How to mount a NTFS hard drive in read write mode

Let's take a simple scenario where a user has two hard drives of 500GB each. First hard drive holds the Windows OS and second one our favour Linux distribution. Our example we assume that the Linux distribution is Debian but instructions are generic so wont be any problem using any other Linux distribution like Fedora, OpenSuSE, Mandriva, ubuntu etc.

How to clear MBR

If you've got issues while trying to boot into your new kernel after upgrading your hardware raid controller driver and want to clear the MBR on a few drives, this is the proper way to do it!

Searching packages with zypper on OpenSuSE

By default, the search command looks for packages of any type, status or repository, having names containing specified string (compares case-insensitively).

Quick way to access a file on a DOS Windows floppy

Use "mtools", no mounting required. For example, I can use the mdir command to quickly inspect the content of the root directory on my DOS floppy.

Allow specific IP via htaccess

By placing the following code in your .htaccess file, you can block access to your website from everyone except the IP addresses you specify.
This can be particularly useful if your website is under construction and you don’t want other visitors to see the site, or have search engine spiders indexing pages that are not yet completed.

Migrate from 32bit version to 64bit on ubuntu

Same technique I assume will apply to any deb based distribution like Debian etc. In this article we will describe and demonstrate some tips to make upgrade easier from any 32bit distribution to 64bit without loosing any data.

Monitor hard drive temperature

Over heatIn this article we will discuss how to monitor your hard drives for high temperature using smartctl and hddtemp. smartd is SMART Disk Monitoring Daemon for Linux. SMART is acronym for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) system built into many ATA-3 and later ATA, IDE and SCSI-3 hard drives. The purpose of SMART is to monitor the reliability of the hard drive and predict drive failures, and to carry out different types of drive self-tests. On the other hand, hddtemp is a small utility (daemonizable) that gives you the temperature of your hard drive by reading S.M.A.R.T. informations (for drives that support this feature).

How to find large directories

Use this simple command to find large directories. To find directories over 1GB.
backup:/# du -h / | grep ^[0-9.]*G
The above command will display something like the following.

Setup NFS server in 5 minutes

Assuming you are on an ubuntu Linux. All you need is the following packages:
sudo apt-get install nfs-kernel-server nfs-common portmap
When configuring portmap do =not= bind loopback. If you do you can either edit /etc/default/portmap by hand or run:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure portmap
sudo /etc/init.d/portmap restart

How to check if firewall is blocking a port

Assume you want to check if port 2222 is running fine. Type the following: lsof -ni tcp:2222
You will get an ouput like:
directadm 4132 nobody    0u  IPv4  12402       TCP *:rockwell-csp2 (LISTEN)
directadm 4377 nobody    0u  IPv4  12402       TCP *:rockwell-csp2 (LISTEN)
directadm 4378 nobody    0u  IPv4  12402       TCP *:rockwell-csp2 (LISTEN)
directadm 4379 nobody    0u  IPv4  12402       TCP *:rockwell-csp2 (LISTEN)
directadm 4380 nobody    0u  IPv4  12402       TCP *:rockwell-csp2 (LISTEN)
directadm 4381 nobody    0u  IPv4  12402       TCP *:rockwell-csp2 (LISTEN)
